How Many Weekends Do You Have Left?
2 min read
Most people think of their life in years. Years feel long. Weekends are a better unit, because weekends are where most of us actually live.
A year has 52 weekends. Over 80 years that is about 4,160. That is the whole supply.
The number by age
Here is roughly how many weekends are left if you live to 80:
| Age | Weekends left |
|---|---|
| 20 | About 3,120 |
| 30 | About 2,600 |
| 40 | About 2,080 |
| 50 | About 1,560 |
| 60 | About 1,040 |
| 70 | About 520 |
At 40, you have already used half. At 60, there are about 1,000 left. That is a number you can hold in your head.
The same ages, counted in weeks, are in what each age looks like.
This is an estimate
Eighty years is a round number, not a promise. Some people get more and some get less. The point is not to predict. The point is to make the container visible.
It gets smaller when you ask who is in it
Not every weekend is free. Many go to chores, errands and work. If you count only the ones you can truly choose, the number drops fast.
Time with people shrinks the same way. If you see a parent four weekends a year, and they have 20 good years left, that is about 80 visits. Not thousands. Eighty.
A child who is 5 will live at home for about 13 more years. That is about 676 weekends with them in the house.
What to do with the number
This is not a reason to panic or to fill every weekend with something big. It is a reason to choose a few on purpose.
- Pick one weekend a month to do something you would regret skipping.
- Name the people. Write down who you want to see, and put it on the calendar.
- Let some weekends be empty. Rest is part of a good life too, as long as you chose it.
The old Stoic habit behind this is simple: remember that time is limited, so that an ordinary Saturday stops feeling like a rehearsal.
